What is an ATWG?

What is an ATWG?

ATWG is the acronym for Around The Way Girl.

You might be wondering what is an ATWG anyways?

Like Martin Lawrence once described on Arsenio Halls syndicated talk show, "its the around the way girl, you know the neighborhood LL Cool J's 'round the way the girl, the girl with the earrings, with hairdo and just know how to coordinate everything that they dress."

According to Queen Latifah for rockthebells.com "That song made me feel like somebody was speaking to me. Not speaking to me in a derogatory way, but really just giving us a shoutout. Me and all of the girls like me from the neighborhood. I think a lot of people thought a guy gets some money and he wants to get some superfly supermodel. But LL made us feel like the supermodels, He made us feel like the queens. He made us feel like we were worthy of everything that he was working towards, that empire that he was working to build..."

To us  an ATWG is a term used in hip hop culture to describe a woman who is down-to-earth, genuine, and represents her local neighborhood and community. She is often independent, street-smart, and confident. The phrase coined by LL Cool J in the fall of 1990 conveys a senses of authentic and pride in one's roots, celebrating the qualities and resilience of women who navigate life. It's a term used to appreciate women for being real, unapologetic, and true to themselves.

So cheers to all the ATWG! ✌
